AFN® Advanced Fiber Nonwovens

H&V’s Advanced Fiber Nonwovens Group (AFN) produces 100% synthetic nonwovens with exotic, high performance fibers. These specialized advanced composite materials are particularly appropriate for demanding applications.

We formulate these long fiber nonwovens to customers unique specifications for use as mats and surfacing veils in a variety of composite applications. AFN is the only supplier that offers custom blending and short runs of high value products. Our materials are found in aerospace, corrosive tank/pipe, radar signature management, thermal insulation, sporting goods and EMI shielding applications. Our materials are exceptional due to their long fibers and uniform dispersion. At both extreme light weights (6 g/m2) and heavier weights (350 g/m2), AFN nonwovens are nearly isotropic with very little directionality in the plane of the fabric. PAN carbon, nickel-coated carbon, PBO, para-aramid, and ECR-glass are just a few of the types of fibers utilized. Several different types of binder systems are also available.

All AFN nonwovens are manufactured in H&V’s Hawkinsville, Georgia plant. The facility is AS 9100 REV B(aerospace) and ISO 9001:2000 certified. The Hawkinsville plant is a 24/7 operation. Most referenced AFN items are available from stock with low minimum order requirements

Key Benefits

  • Excellent high-temperature, abrasion, and chemical resistance
  • Extraordinarily smooth surfaces
  • High torsional rigidity and excellent stability
  • High or low conductivity for absorbing or reflecting electromagnetic radiation
  • Applications

Radar Aborbing Veils (Tailored Resistivity®)
AFN manufactures lightweight fibrous veils for a variety of radar signature management and low observable applications. These AS 9100 materials are recognized for their uniform and finely tuned electrical properties. We can tailor a web to your specifications.

Tank & Pipe Composites
Our materials are used in this industry for corrosion resistance applications and static dissipation. Tank manufacturers have used AFN materials for decades to conform to the most complex bends and corners. Fast wet out and quick de-airing are also pluses. Roll goods are immediately available from stock with low minimum orders.

Fuel Cell
AFN produces high-quality GDL (Gas Diffusion Layer) substrates for use in PEM fuel cells. Our highly conductive GDL material is strong, highly flexible, and durable.

EMI Shielding and ESD
AFN manufactures highly conductive nonwovens for use in EMI, RFI, and MRI shielding, ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) and ground plane applications. These veils and mats are extremely uniform and are made from a variety of fibers including carbon and nickel-coated carbon.

Composite Rolls
AFN materials are used in the fabrication of composite rolls for industrial machinery. Our nonwoven sheet’s uniformity and isotropic nature make it ideal for applications requiring smooth and durable surfaces. A full range of material is kept in stock including para-aramid, carbon, glass, and blends.

Industrial Specialties
AFN® customers are currently using our products as pultruded tube covering, honeycomb facing, circuit board stabilizers, thermal insulation, battery electrodes, and adhesive substrate.

Sporting Goods
Fly rods, kayaks, snowboards, skateboards, skis, and bicycles represent just some of the equipment that incorporate our products. Customers most often request impact resistance, stiffness, vibration damping, appearance, and weight savings properties.
